Michigan’s governor recognized DTE Energy last week for its push to decrease communication barriers with Michigan’s deaf community. Michigan is home to 100,000 people who use only American Sign Language (ASL). Working with the Alliance for Deaf Services, DTE improved its Home Energy Consultation program to reach deaf customers better.
DTE’s communication strategies included groundbreaking use of Video Remote Interpretation and other targeted outreach such as a Facebook page and YouTube videos. By considering deaf people in its communication plan, DTE increased the number of deaf customers it can serve through its home consultations.
